Award-Winning Portrait | Melodie and Danielle

I'm completely enamored with the mood and tones in this portrait of two young women whom are best friends. And while they are not related by blood, they are sisters in their hearts. We all have a family that we are born into. We also have the family that we choose along the twisting, turning journey of life. These young ladies have chosen in each other the bond of sisterhood and that feminine, life-sustaining connection is what I aimed to capture in their portrait.

I am the youngest of four sisters. My sister Maria passed away at the young age of 31 from a brain aneurysm. My oldest sister, Linda lost her battle with breast cancer at the young age of 60. I miss my sisters. Every day. The silver lining is that I have a treasure trove of memories of my sisters that are encapsulated in photographs, letters and in blog posts. Linda's beautiful writing is published on our sisters' blog, Salvation Sisters

I am a portrait photographer because I believe in the power of portraiture. We can preserve our memories in images of a particular place, at a unique time, with the people that are most important to us. There is a reason that when catastrophe strikes and a person only has a few minutes to pack important items before evacuating, she chooses to carry the family photo albums with her to safety. Photographs are our physical manifestations of our treasured memories. Photographs are coveted heirlooms that are passed from one generation to the next.
